Fixes bugs reported by our nice little Termites tribe over the last couple of weeks:

  • Improved the algorithm which decides where to place students
  • Normal users can use Termites which has been installed and unlocked by an administrator user
  • Write log file to user home directory instead of install directory

In parallel to these bug fix releases we are continuing to work on the next feature release version due early 2012. Termites version 2.5.0 hot off the press!

Hello from Team Termites,

At Termites, we’re always thinking of new ways to help teachers get better results from their seating charts and welcome all feedback and feature requests that you have sent our way. We have taken some of those ideas on board to make Termites even better for your classroom management strategy. So without further ado, we are thrilled to announce the release of Termites version 2.5! It’s absolutely packed with new features and lots of improvements.

What’s new in Version 2.5?

  • Students can be grouped or mixed by gender.
  • Students can now be mixed by ability (could previously only group).
  • “Who’s next?” button to randomly select a student and highlight them on the chart.
  • Checkbox to explicitly generate a random chart.
  • Improvements when tweaking seating chart:
    • Adding a new student to a class with a current seating chart randomly assigns them to a desk.
    • Removing a desk with a student on it randomly places the student at another desk.
    • Automatically placing students (by generating a new chart) uses the current seating chart as the starting point. Should result in less movement of students from their current desks.
    • Dragging-and-dropping students from one desk to another now works better
  • Improvements in printing:
    • Chart is now scaled to fit a single page when printing. Also improved the header, footer and appearance (is a little blurry though but we’re trying to rectify this asap).
    • New page settings option to adjust paper size, etc before printing.
    • Select a font to use for student names on seating chart and print out.
  • Improvements in user interface to make it even easier to use:
  • (download)
  • Complete rewrite of the back-end which means future releases will come more regularly since it is now much easier to add new features or fix bugs. It also means there is potential for new platforms like mobile & web.
  • Various bug fixes.

Phew! As you can tell we’ve been very busy here and it’s all made possible with your help. We want Termites to be an indispensable tool for all teachers, not only to bring the joy back to teaching but for your students to get a more fulfilled education.

Free teacher resources, additional currencies, improved website, and a 75% off sale

The last month has seen a few changes to the website designed to make it easier to use and look better. I think it's looking pretty spiffy now.

I've moved all my old teacher resources onto the site and made them available under a free Creative Commons licence. So please feel free to download, modify, and share them with your colleagues or just simply use them in your classroom as is. It would be fantastic to know even more teachers are using our material to help students.

We have also added additional currencies to purchase an unlock code. This should make it more convenient for our colleagues in United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Europe to join our little tribe. So if you have any friends overseas then please let them know.

There are a few things left to do on the site but focus has now moved onto development work for the next version of the software. There will be lots of improvements, a few bug fixes, and a few new features. Keep an eye out for the update dialog pop-up when you run Termites.

Big thanks to all the new customers this month and for all the interesting chats we have been having in the help desk, it's been great to meet you all. More content will start appearing in the help desk forums soon as it becomes the main point for documentation.

One last thing - don't miss out on the 75% off sale we are currently having on licences for education students or teachers in their first year out.

New Termites Version (2.2)

New version is out, mostly bug fixes and minor improvements. Thanks to everyone who contacted us to report issues and ideas this time, we couldn't do it without you!

Here are the best bits:
  • Improved the back end algorithm
  • Display the value of student relationships and ability
  • Don't show glued seats when printing or exporting
  • Remember user preferences
  • Fixed a few of bugs
So be sure to update. If you have purchased an unlock code then it will continue to work in this version.

New Termites Version (2.1)

A new version of Termites is out! Classroom seating chart software has never been this good! :)

There are 4 BIG new features to the latest version:
  1. Manually drag and drop students from desk to desk.
  2. Set desks not to place students at. Great for building a buffer around disruptive kids!
  3. Set all students to be near the front of the room with a single click instead of doing it for each and every student.
  4. Export your seating chart to an image file so you can email your seating chart or place it in a Powerpoint slide.

Plus, we have made it even easier to use and squashed a few pesky bugs.

Do you know that  you can get Termites for FREE? Any teacher or school with a great story to tell - doing special things for their students, colleagues, and communities - is eligible to get a license on the house!
